Priority box

Since last year, the winners of the age categories in the UCI Gravel World Series qualifying races have been given a privileged starting position at the UCI Gravel World Championships. This is a position in the front row, also known as the “priority box.”

The number of riders allowed in this priority box is now being expanded. In addition to the reigning world champions, all riders who finish in the top 3 in a qualifying race will also be allocated a place. This new rule will only apply in categories with more than 100 riders at the start. Older categories that have a combined start will not receive a priority box, even if the combined group exceeds 100 riders.

The main goal of this update is to increase safety. By placing riders of a similar level together, the UCI reduces the need for riders to ride through the peloton in the first kilometers of the race. This also serves as recognition and reward for their performance and prevents them from having to wait for hours in their regular starting box.

The race is preceded by a 10-minute moto who checks that the course is free, marshals are in place and incoming traffic is being blocked or put on the side. The driver is wearing a red jacket “Advance” and will stop after 1,5 lap where riders are going right towards the finish loop. This moto will then serve as the red flag moto for the men 65+ and women 50+ once they arrive to this point for their finish loop.

A second moto with a red flag opens the race 300-500 meters before the first riders and will continue to precede the women elite during the full race to then also turn right towards the finish.

The full local loop (until the turn towards the finish for the last 18km) will be totally closed for traffic until 14h40 (Saturday) and 17h00 (Sunday) when the green flag starts from the split towards the finish (Blokweg) to make one final loop of the local lap to ride at a pace of 20 km/h on Saturday and 25km/h on Sunday, to then continue on the finish loop at the same pace.

Riders are ranked if they finish within two hours after the first women elite on Saturday or men elite on Sunday.

Riders have priority on the course and are protected with marshals and/or policemen at the intersections and dangerous points and have first right of passage within the above time frames.

Once the moto with the green flag has passed you, you will have to respect road traffic regulations but can still continue!

The top 3 in each category are requested to proceed to the podium immediately after the finish. There is a waiting area at the podium where they can prepare for the podium ceremony. The results for each category will be published here. The results can also be consulted online on the website.
